Its primary goal is to provide a platform for educators, researchers, and students in pedagogy, language, literature, and German Studies (DaF) to share and exchange experiences. The conference emphasizes the complex interactions between education, language, literacy, and literary studies, highlighting the global significance of literacy in various forms, and aims to advance the fields of German Studies and DaF.

https://proceedings.nexuspublishing.org/index.php/iconels/article/view/94 Teaching and Learning in the Age of Artificial Intelligence: Towards an Integrated Approach to Digital Literacy in Algerian Higher Education 2025-07-21T23:48:41+00:00 Bouchra Aboura bouchra.aboura@icloud.com
In recent years, Algerian universities have faced a new challenge: adapting to the rapid rise of artificial intelligence while still closing long-standing digital gaps. This contribution looks at how digital literacy is evolving in higher education through national strategies, local policies, and direct engagement with faculty members. Based on policy texts, institutional reports, and hands-on experience supporting faculty development, it sheds light on the gap between national ambitions and the everyday realities encountered by teachers and students. While new platforms and tools are being deployed, key challenges remain: limited infrastructure, lack of training, and the uncritical use of AI tools in learning environments.

Rather than treating digital transformation as a purely technical shift, this paper argues for a broader, more grounded approach, one that includes training, ethical reflection, and adaptation to each academic discipline. A practical roadmap is proposed to help institutions move forward: start with training, provide clear frameworks, and adapt strategies to local needs and contexts. At its core, this reflection suggests that meaningful change in education doesn’t begin with tools, but with people. Supporting teachers and students in thoughtful, inclusive ways is essential if AI is to serve learning, rather than replace it.
2025-08-18T00:00:00+00:00 Copyright (c) 2025 Bouchra Aboura https://proceedings.nexuspublishing.org/index.php/iconels/article/view/97 Documentation of Low-Resource Languages in Southern China in the Digital Era:Interdisciplinary Fieldwork, Practice, and Values 2025-08-13T05:55:19+00:00 Yancheng He yanchenghe@126.com Zhiwei Xu xzw0704@gmail.com
In the digital era, documenting low-resource languages in Southern China, especially minority and endangered languages in Southwest China, is of great significance. These languages, embodying distinctive cultural heritages and cognitive systems, are under threat from language shift and modernization. Rooted in documentary linguistics—a newly born and still growing field dedicated to comprehensively documenting languages through digital media technologies for dynamic recording, long-term preservation, and easy accessible dissemination—for about two decades, we have conducted a couple of projects in documenting several languages or dialects of the Tai-Kadai family, utilizing interdisciplinary fieldwork to preserve linguistic data and cultural heritages embedded in these languages, thus obtaining some achievements in language preservation and revitalization, enriching global linguistic diversity and cultural heritage.

This comprehensive interdisciplinary approach, aligned with documentary linguistics’ methodologies of participatory recording and cross-disciplinary data integration, not only comprehensively documents language data but also integrates diverse cultural knowledge, bridging the gap between linguistics and other disciplines. It provides a new model for low-resource language documentation, highlighting the value of preserving linguistic and cultural diversity, and offers essential data for language preservation and research, cultural inheritance, and community development.
2025-08-18T00:00:00+00:00 Copyright (c) 2025 Yancheng He, Zhiwei Xu https://proceedings.nexuspublishing.org/index.php/iconels/article/view/96 Metacognitive Strategies in Reading Instruction for German Language Learners– a Literature Review 2025-08-13T03:21:17+00:00 Dewi Kartika dewi.kartika.fs@um.ac.id Primardiana Hermilia Wijayati primardiana.hermilia.fs@um.ac.id Dudy Syafruddin dudy.syafruddin.fs@um.ac.id Abdul Kasim Achmad chuaka@gmail.com
This literature review investigates the use of metacognitive strategies—planning, monitoring, and evaluating—to support reading comprehension among B1-level learners of German as a Foreign Language (GFL). In the Indonesian educational context, limited exposure to authentic German texts and linguistic differences often hinder learners’ ability to understand complex written materials. Metacognitive strategies offer a structured approach to help learners manage their reading processes, build autonomy, and engage more deeply with texts. The review highlights how these strategies can be integrated into reading instruction through pre-reading (goal setting and text prediction), while-reading (clarifying and self-questioning), and post-reading (reflection and summarization) activities. However, the implementation of metacognitive instruction faces challenges, including low student awareness, limited teacher preparation, and a strong focus on exam-based outcomes in classrooms. To overcome these barriers, the paper advocates for sustained, explicit instruction and teacher training that embeds strategic reading into regular classroom practice. It also calls for curriculum and assessment reforms that value process-oriented reading. Ultimately, fostering metacognitive awareness equips learners not only to improve comprehension but also to become more self-regulated, reflective, and confident language users in the long term.
For Indonesian learners of German, applying correct word stress often presents a particular challenge. This study aims to examine how learners perceive and produce word stress in the German language. A descriptive qualitative methode with an auditive phonetic approach was employed to investigate the perception and production of word stress as a suprasegmental element in German. Data were collected in two stages: (1) a production task involving the oral reading of words and pseudowords, which were analyzed auditorily, and (2) a perception task in which participants listened to recorded words and identified the position of stress. The analysis compared the accuracy of participants’ production and perception and identified common patterns of error. The findings are expected to serve as a basis for developing more contextual and learner-oriented suprasegmental phonetics teaching materials for Indonesian learners of German.
2025-08-18T00:00:00+00:00 Copyright (c) 2025 Rafika Robbyanti, Budi Aris Lethulur, Wilma Akihary https://proceedings.nexuspublishing.org/index.php/iconels/article/view/72 Let's Read Media in Indonesian Language Learning to Improve Reading Literacy of Grade 1 Students 2025-07-02T06:34:56+00:00 Nur Samsiyah nursamsiyah@unipma.ac.id Agung Widyantoro agung_2301203004@mhs.unipma.ac.id
The development of technology has an impact on the use of increasingly advanced media, especially digital media. However, the position of language between thoughts and the reality of the world observed through our five senses is not yet clear. The question is whether language influences the way humans view the reality around them, or if, on the other hand, reality influences humans' thoughts about the world. This paper seeks to explain the issue of language's position between thoughts and the world by comparing the concepts of the Principle of Linguistic Relativity proposed by Benjamin Lee Whorf and Language Games introduced by Ludwig Wittgenstein. Literature studies were conducted by examining Wittgenstein's Philosophical Investigations and works that influenced Whorf's Language, Thought, and Reality. This paper concludes that the position of language is not between thoughts and the reality of the world, but rather encompasses and bridges both. The key to understanding this relationship lies in the two-way interaction that language regulates. This reciprocal mechanism is often overlooked in language learning and neglecting the fact that language can shape each individual’s perspective of the world. Realities are seen in many ways, as many as languages used to perceive them.
2025-08-18T00:00:00+00:00 Copyright (c) 2025 Irawan Santoso Suryo Basuki https://proceedings.nexuspublishing.org/index.php/iconels/article/view/65 Comparative Analysis of Mandarin and Indonesian Consonants 2025-06-23T10:59:54+00:00 Muhammad Jawad muhammad.jawad.2402426@students.um.ac.id Karina Fefi Laksana Sakti karryna.sakti.fs@um.ac.id
This study presents a comparative analysis of consonant systems in Mandarin and Indonesian, employing a descriptive-comparative approach. Data were collected through a theoretical literature review, focusing on consonant classification by place and manner of articulation, voicing, and phonotactic distribution. The results reveal that while both languages share similarities in bilabial, alveolar, and velar consonants, as well as stop, fricative, and nasal articulations, their differences are more pronounced. Mandarin exhibits unique features such as phonemic aspiration contrasts, retroflex consonants (/zh/, /ch/, /sh/), and alveopalatal sounds (/j/, /q/, /x/), which are absent in Indonesian. Conversely, Indonesian permits a more flexible coda system (/p/, /t/, /k/, /m/, /n/, /ŋ/, /r/, /l/) compared to Mandarin, which only allows /n/ and /ŋ/. The analysis highlights learning challenges, particularly for Indonesian speakers mastering Mandarin’s aspirated and retroflex consonants. These findings carry pedagogical implications for language instruction, speech therapy, and second language acquisition, emphasizing the need for targeted pronunciation training. The data sources in this study are three poetry texts contained in the book Tangshi Yibai Shou. The data were collected using reading and note-taking techniques. From the analysis, it can be seen that there is a whole system of signs, especially indexes and symbols that represent life in the Tang dynasty. This proves the existence of signs and relationships to the objects they represent. The relationship is in the form of similarity, convention, and existence to the object. The poems contain themes of longing, separation, sadness, and reflections on the relationship between humans and nature that represent life during the Tang dynasty. Communication is an important part that is done by humans as social beings in order to fulfill their needs. It involves not only the transfer of words but also the exchange of cultural values, emotions, and intentions. Throughout the communication process, there are several errors in conveying information due to inaccurate interpretation of meaning. Misunderstandings often arise when idiomatic expressions are interpreted literally, rather than contextually, especially by language learners. Besides, this study answers three main research questions: how to understand the context of meaning in German idiom expressions; what is the function and role of idiom meaning (Redewendungen); and are there any relationships between idioms and cultural contexts. By using qualitative research methods such as media analysis, on the YouTube platform, this study aims to gather insights into idioms used in daily German communication. Analyzing idioms through authentic media content provides a more realistic and culturally grounded understanding of how they are actually used. A Likert-scale survey and in-depth interviews were used to examine preferences in four aspects: pair vs. group roleplay, preferred themes (daily life, academic, or professional scenarios), preferred formats (improvised vs. scripted) and preferred show in (live presentation in class vs. making videotape). The results show that most students prefer to pair roleplay with familiar, everyday themes and a flexible format that combines improvisation and light scripting and prefer to do live presentations in class for the Roleplay. A total of 20 second semester students from Class C participated in a Likert scale questionnaire, and six of them were also interviewed for deeper insight.

This study suggests that aligning roleplay activities with student preferences can support more active participation and better language learning outcomes. Future research could further explore how these preferences relate to students' performance and confidence in real communication.
2025-08-18T00:00:00+00:00 Copyright (c) 2025 Iwa Sobara, Diva Karina Putri, Marsya Ika Nurhanna, Annisa Verdha Sahati https://proceedings.nexuspublishing.org/index.php/iconels/article/view/81 Understanding German Grammar Through Reading Line Webtoon Digital Comics in Telegram Community 2025-07-03T03:06:14+00:00 Kaffana Riski Audina kaffanaaudina183@gmail.com Desti Nur Aini desti.nur.fs@um.ac.id
This study aims to describe German grammar learning through reading Webtoon and learners' responses in using Line Webtoon as a learning medium. The research subjects used were members of the telegram group "Belajar Niveau A2". The research was conducted asynchronously through chat and phone calls using the telegram application. The research used a qualitative descriptive approach. The data were collected using questionnaire and interview techniques, while the analysis technique used the 6P analysis model (approach, excavation, deepening, matching, interpretation, and presentation). The results showed that learning using Line Webtoon digital comic media was conducive and active during the process as seen from the learners' activeness when asking and answering questions from the teacher. The learners become interested as well as motivated to learn German through the media because learning feels like reading casually rather than studying, so Webtoon can be used as a new breakthrough as a support in training grammatical skills as well as German reading skills
2025-08-18T00:00:00+00:00 Copyright (c) 2025 Desti Nur Aini, Kaffana Riski Audina https://proceedings.nexuspublishing.org/index.php/iconels/article/view/85 Development of A Bilingual Digital Booklet for Tourism In Malang City 2025-07-09T16:44:00+00:00 Regina Dila Karlinda regina.dila.2102426@students.um.ac.id Karina Fefi Laksana Sakti karryna.sakti.fs@um.ac.id Tiksno Widyatmoko tiksno.widyatmoko.fs@um.ac.id
This research and development aimed to produce a bilingual digital booklet (Indonesia-Mandarin language) as a media for tourism information in Malang City aimed at tourists from China. These vlogs are outputs of the course Mündliche Konversation, which is designed to train students' speaking skills in a realistic, independent, and communicative context. This study employs a qualitative approach using content analysis methods. Data were collected from the documentation of eight group videos created by students and analyzed based on German grammar theory by Helbig and Buscha (1996). The results show that students used various types of conjunctions, both coordinating and subordinating, with a predominance of subordinating conjunctions such as dass and weil. Despite attempts to construct complex sentence structures, several errors were found, including errors in verb placement, verb selection, absence of a subject, and the lack of a verb in clauses, indicating the need for further grammatical development.
2025-08-18T00:00:00+00:00 Copyright (c) 2025 Isnaini Nur Pangesti, Faulanita Pawittri Trisnawati, Iwa Sobara https://proceedings.nexuspublishing.org/index.php/iconels/article/view/88 The Role of Social Media in Enhancing Students' Extrinsic Social and Instrumental Motivation in German Learning 2025-07-10T11:36:28+00:00 Adam Juliano Kristianto adam.juliano.2202416@students.um.ac.id Shohibu Zaman shohibu.zaman.2202416@students.um.ac.id Zahra Dinda Rodistya zahra.dinda.2202416@students.um.ac.id Herri Akhmad Bukhori herri.akhmad.fs@um.ac.id
This study aims to describe the role of social media in increasing students' extrinsic motivation, both in the social and instrumental categories, in learning German. Through a descriptive quantitative approach, data were collected from 51 student respondents who are active users of social media who have attended German language courses for at least one semester. A 5-point Likert scale questionnaire was used to measure three main variables, namely intensity of social media use, instrumental extrinsic motivation, and social extrinsic motivation. The results show that platforms such as Instagram and TikTok are significantly utilized by students as a means of self-learning, expanding vocabulary, and strengthening social connections with online learning communities. Social media is also proven to support learning that is more flexible, interesting and relevant to the digital needs of today's students. This finding confirms that social media has great potential as an additional learning medium that can externally motivate students, both for social (community acceptance) and instrumental (career and academic development) purposes.
2025-08-18T00:00:00+00:00 Copyright (c) 2025 Adam Juliano Kristianto, Shohibu Zaman, Zahra Dinda Rodistya, Herri Akhmad Bukhori https://proceedings.nexuspublishing.org/index.php/iconels/article/view/82 Analysis of Verbstellung Errors in A2-B1 German Language Students' Podcast Assignments in the Mündliche Kommunikation Course 2025-07-10T12:46:34+00:00 Anin Saufa Pratiwi anin.saufa.2202416@students.um.ac.id Raida Zharfa Amalia raida.zharfa.2202416@students.um.ac.id Iwa Sobara iwa.sobara.fs@um.ac.id
This study aims to analyze Verbstellung (verb order) errors in German verbal communication made by A2-B1 level students through podcast assignments in the Mündliche Kommunikation course. The analysis was conducted using Pit Corder's error analysis theory approach, which provided the researcher with the opportunity to identify the types and characteristics of the errors. Verbstellung is an important aspect of German sentence structure that is often a source of errors due to mother tongue interference and lack of understanding of grammatical structures. Data was collected from the transcription of student podcasts, then analyzed to find the dominant error patterns. This study found that verb position errors, especially in subordinate clauses, are a major challenge for beginner learners. Most of the errors indicate that learners do not fully understand German sentence structure, so a teaching approach that focuses more on practice and error correction is needed.

2025-08-18T00:00:00+00:00 Copyright (c) 2025 Anin Saufa Pratiwi, Raida Zharfa Amalia, Iwa Sobara https://proceedings.nexuspublishing.org/index.php/iconels/article/view/91 Career Opportunities For Students Of Mandarin Language Education Study Program In Tourism Industry 2025-07-11T13:36:04+00:00 Aulia Putri Ramadhani auliaputriirr@gmail.com Karina Fefi Laksana Sakti karryna.sakti.fs@um.ac.id Deddy Kurniawan deddy.kurniawan.fs@um.ac.id
Tourism is a strategic sector that contributes significantly to global economic growth. In Indonesia, this sector serves as one of the main pillars of national economic development, particularly with the increasing number of international tourists—including those from China—visiting various destinations such as Malang City. This phenomenon opens up new opportunities in the job market, especially for graduates of the Mandarin Language Education Study Program. This study aims to identify the career potential of students in this program within the tourism industry. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through questionnaires distributed to students and tourism industry practitioners. The analysis results show that most students express a strong interest in pursuing careers in this sector. The most in-demand and popular profession is that of a tour guide, especially those who are able to communicate in Mandarin. Nevertheless, the main challenge faced is the lack of practical foreign language proficiency and other supporting skills. Therefore, it is necessary to improve competencies through language training and professional skill development so that graduates are better prepared to compete in the job market, particularly in the tourism sector, which is based on service and cross-cultural communication.
2025-08-18T00:00:00+00:00 Copyright (c) 2025 Aulia Putri Ramadhani, Karina Fefi Laksana Sakti, Deddy Kurniawan https://proceedings.nexuspublishing.org/index.php/iconels/article/view/93 Challenges in Translating German Comics Nerd Girl Into Indonesian 2025-07-16T07:52:08+00:00 Eqtsani Alfatkhus Shivana eqtsani.alfatkhus.2202416@students.um.ac.id Widya Agustina widya.agustina.2202416@students.um.ac.id Rizman Usman rizman.fs@um.ac.id
Nerd Girl is a German comic by Sarah Burrini. This study examines the challenges that arise in translating the German comic Nerd Girl into Indonesian. Comics as visual literary works require translators to maintain a balance between linguistic, cultural, and visual aspects. The main objective of this study is to identify forms of incompatibility between the source text (SL) and target text (TL), and to describe the translation strategies used. This study uses a qualitative approach with case study methods and content analysis, where data are obtained from the original comic text and the translation results carried out by the researcher herself. The results of the study show that the main challenges include translating idioms, figurative language, slang, cultural references, wordplay, and character speech styles. The translation strategies used include cultural adaptation, the use of functional equivalents, and a contextual approach based on visuals and narrative logic. In conclusion, the success of comic translation depends not only on linguistic accuracy, but also on understanding the cultural context and character characterization.
2025-08-18T00:00:00+00:00 Copyright (c) 2025 Eqtsani Alfatkhus Shivana, Widya Agustina, Rizman Usman https://proceedings.nexuspublishing.org/index.php/iconels/article/view/95 Representation of Gretel's Crisis of Trust in the Secret Magic Control Agency's Fairy Tale Adaptation 2025-08-04T13:51:20+00:00 Pradypta Prameswari pradypta.nurziyah.2202416@students.um.ac.id Dicky Samudra Alamsyah dicky.samudra.2202416@students.um.ac.id Rizal Bagus Sanjaya rizal.bagus.2202126@students.um.ac.id
This research analyses the representation of Gretel's crisis of trust in the film Secret Magic Control Agency using Roland Barthes' theory. The main focus of this research is to identify how the crisis of trust is reflected in Gretel's behaviour and character interactions. This research reveals the factors that influence the crisis of trust, including environmental influences and relationship dynamics with other characters, as well as experiences inspired by the classic story of Hansel und Gretel from the Brothers Grimm. In addition, this research also discusses the role of film as a learning medium. Referring to Weisarkurnai's (2017) opinion, films are considered aesthetic works and information tools that are entertaining and educational. On the other hand, the moral, ethical, and ethical values contained in fairy tales function as a means of learning for children, as explained by Setiawan (2018). Through this analysis, it is expected to understand the complexity of Gretel's character and the relevance of the values contained in the narrative.
2025-08-18T00:00:00+00:00 Copyright (c) 2025 Pradypta Prameswari, Dicky Samudra, Rizal Bagus https://proceedings.nexuspublishing.org/index.php/iconels/article/view/62 The Role of Study Visit in Learning, Motivation, and Intercultural Understanding of German Literature Students 2025-06-17T04:01:12+00:00 Kamila Adriana Ardine kamila.adriana.2202416@students.um.ac.id Nur Waiduri Khalishah nur.waiduri.22022416@students.um.ac.id Wilma Prisca Anavi wilma.prisca.2202416@students.um.ac.id Iwa Sobara iwa.sobara.fs@um.ac.id
This research analyzes the role of study visits to Germany on language learning, motivation, and intercultural understanding of German Literature students at State University of Malang. The media was developed using the ADDIE model, which includes analysis, design, development, implementation, and initial evaluation stages. Development involved classroom observations of grade XI IBB students at SMA Laboratorium UM, teacher interviews, and validation by media and content experts. The final product is a family tree puzzle board representing kinship structures on both paternal and maternal sides, complete with narratives and Hanzi illustrations. Validation results showed that the media was highly feasible in terms of visual appeal, content quality, and usability. The implementation stage revealed positive student responses, especially in terms of engagement, enthusiasm, and comprehension. Using a conventional gamification approach, Jiapu Puzzle proved effective as an alternative medium to support engaging and contextual Mandarin language and cultural learning.
2025-08-19T00:00:00+00:00 Copyright (c) 2025 Anya Linggar Cahyani, Karina Fefi Laksana Sakti, Sri Prameswari Indriwardhani
